The Future of Girls’ Education: Building Capable and Confident Learners

There is a great deal of language in education about believing in young people. In girls’ education particularly, we speak about empowering young women, championing their voices and encouraging them to recognise what is possible. These are important commitments, but belief must also be accompanied by action.

A recent reflection from Megan Murphy, Global Executive Director of the International Coalition of Girls’ Schools, wrote that believing in girls “is not passive”. It requires sustained investment in their voices, their education and their leadership, and a commitment to equipping them with the skills to navigate complexity and challenge. This reflection speaks strongly to our work at St Columba’s College and to the responsibility we hold as educators of young women. We know that our students will enter a world that continues to change rapidly. While we cannot predict every challenge they will encounter, the careers they will pursue or the opportunities that will emerge, we can ensure they leave St Columba’s with the confidence and capability to respond to what comes next.

This means providing an education that extends beyond the acquisition of knowledge. It means developing young people who understand how they learn, who can think critically and creatively, who are willing to ask questions and who have the confidence to persevere when learning is challenging.

This philosophy is reflected in our Developing Your Learning Toolkit program, introduced across Years 7–12 earlier this year. The program focuses deliberately on teaching students not only what to learn, but how to learn. Through evidence-based strategies, students are developing practical approaches to strengthen their understanding, memory and long-term learning, while building a personalised toolkit of strategies they can draw upon across different subjects and stages of their education.

Importantly, Developing Your Learning Toolkit is about more than study techniques; it is about developing agency. As our students progress through their years at St Columba’s, we want them to become increasingly confident and independent in their learning. Rather than relying on someone else to provide the next step, they learn to recognise what they need, identify an appropriate strategy, reflect on its effectiveness and adjust their approach when necessary. These are skills that will serve them well beyond the classroom. Our commitment to girls’ education calls us to recognise the potential of every student and to create an environment in which that potential can be realised. It asks us to hold high expectations for our students while providing them with the knowledge, opportunities and support they need to meet those expectations.

We want our students to leave St Columba’s not only having achieved academically, but knowing that they are capable learners and thoughtful young women who can contribute meaningfully to their communities and confidently navigate their future pathways.

Believing in our students is therefore something we must demonstrate through what we do each day, through the opportunities we provide, the expectations we hold and the skills we deliberately develop. Through initiatives such as Developing Your Learning Toolkit, we are equipping our students not simply for their next assessment or their next year of schooling, but with approaches to learning that they can carry with them throughout their lives. In doing so, we continue our enduring commitment to educating young women who are prepared not only to enter the world before them, but to contribute to shaping it.
