Principal's Message

Vale Mr Terrence Reade

Thank you for the messages of condolence and support at the passing of Mr Terrence Reade. Mr Reade’s illness severely impacted the teacher and the colleague we had come to know. I share with you just a few examples of the outpouring of support for Mr Reade shared with us by our alumnae.

Very Sad news.

Vale Mr Reade. I was in the class of ’95, and my best memories at St Columba’s were around all the different school sports events I attended, and his enthusiasm to get a team that was as equally enthusiastic as him and trained up as he hoped.

He is a big loss. Sending love to his family.

Many thanks for passing on this information.

Mr Reade was a wonderful teacher and leader that I looked up to.

Having him as a teacher was one of the many highlights of my time at St Columba’s.

This is very sad news – I hope he knew how valued he was in the St Columba’s community, and how many students he inspired.

Please pass on my deepest gratitude to Ms Grima for informing me about the passing of Terry Reade. He was a wonderful teacher and student council guide and support person. I do and will continue to remember him fondly. My deepest sympathies to all the staff and students there who will mourn his loss.
I would appreciate the funeral details when they come to hand as mentioned in the correspondence.

The following is an excerpt of the part of the eulogy delivered by two of Terry’s colleagues, Kathryn Hicks and Joan Dillon.

Many of the connections Terry made with students extended well beyond their six years of secondary school. He had an exceptional memory for names and dates and frequently surprised past students by recalling stories from their school days.

Terry was devoted to coaching the Athletics and Cross-Country teams. He taught more than the fundamentals of running. He nurtured the character and spirit of each student and championed girls in sport. His unwavering commitment and generosity shaped countless lives, leaving a legacy of discipline, perseverance, and deep personal connections that continue to inspire and guide those he taught.

Terry was the manager of the St Columba’s Backstage Crew for close to 30 years. Students joined his crew in Year 7 and signed on for the duration of their secondary schooling. Terry mentored the students individually and as a group. He developed their understanding of behind the scenes roles that included stage mechanics, lighting and sound. Not only did Terry and the crew work tirelessly (and mostly unseen) at College assemblies and concerts but they were an integral part of the success of College musicals and Rock Eisteddfods. Terry’s students won Best Backstage Crew awards and Best Lighting awards at many Rock Eisteddfod competitions. This was a testament to his guidance, discipline and dedication.

We continue to extend our prayers and support to Mr Reade’s family.

Excitement is Mounting

The capacity for students to select Food Technology and Materials Technology as elective studies has brought a sense of excitement for our students. While we will make every endeavour to accommodate student choice, as per our usual practice, demand for the subject might outstrip supply (rooms and teachers). I would like to assure students and families, that should any students miss out for 2025, the capacity to select these subjects in subsequent years will not be impacted by not having completed the subject in previous years.

Student Management System Update

As I indicated in my letter at the commencement of this term, families will need to be re-provisioned in SEQTA Engage. There is a further update, in relation to the new software that has been deployed, that may mean a further re-provisioning is necessary. In light of this, we will delay the re-provisioning so that families will only need to do this once. The expected email will come to families in the latter part of this term.

In the meantime, families are still able to access the usual information in relation to their child’s learning from SEQTA.

Prayer

July 31st was the Feast Day of St Ignatius of Loyola. Mary Aikenhead and the Religious Sisters of Charity have always had a special connection to St Ignatius. Because of her experience and training with the sisters of the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary in York, England, Mary Aikenhead chose Ignatian spirituality for her congregation. This spirituality is a way of expressing the values and teachings of Jesus Christ. At the heart of Ignatian spirituality are the Spiritual Practices of St Ignatius of Loyola. They call us:

  • to seek and find God in all things

  • to be a contemplative, even in the midst of activity

  • to a love that leads to total surrender

An aspect of Ignatian spirituality that we still continue to this day in our college is that of the Ignatian Examen. Every Friday morning in the chapel, staff and students are invited to pray the Examen at 8:15am as a way of reflecting on your week and becoming refreshed for the week ahead.

To celebrate the feast of St Ignatius of Loyola, we’re inviting you to pray his prayer for generosity.

CHICAGO – ALUMNAE NIGHT

It was an incredibly successful run of the St. Columba’s and St. Bernard Colleges’ production of Chicago. Congratulations to all the cast, crew and staff who put in an enormous amount of time, energy and passion into what was one of the best musicals we have produced.

The messages of support and congratulations from our community were so very much appreciated. Here are a few:

“Just a quick note to pass my congratulations onto you guys on the wonderful show “Chicago” that I had the pleasure of attending on Saturday evening. The show was every bit as good as any of the regular award winning productions that our local theatre companies put on with great success down here in my hometown of Geelong. One of my nieces was a member of the Chicago cast – and it was plain to see that she and her fellow cast and crew (despite what I heard were lots of hard work and a few tough rehearsals along the way) enjoyed a wonderful experience in being involved. Great stuff. Well done all!”

“Just a note to say thanks for the kind invitation to ‘Chicago’. As usual, it was a terrific performance by all involved, so my congratulations to all. It was good to be there, and to enjoy the evening with all present.”

– Fr John Hannon

“I just wanted to share my sincere congratulations on such a wonderful performance of Chicago. I was in the audience last night and was blown away with the level of choreography and talent amongst all students. It’s evident the time and effort that the dedicated staff allow to happen. A huge project to put together, but a successful one that students will remember!”

“Having taught Drama for over 30 years at both universities and schools and across different states and countries, it is no light matter for me to say that your production of Chicago was one of the best productions I have ever seen. The lead characters were stunning in their realisation and embodiments of the characters, with a level of nuance that many professional performers have not achieved. The audience were gripped by the way they were able to drive the narrative arc of each character through voice and movement. Simply stunning!”

On Saturday 20 July we held our Alumnae Night. It was great to connect with former students at the preshow cocktail event, who reminisced about their own experiences of having been in a College production.

Report and Resources on Self-Confidence for Women

The International Coalition of Girls schools has shared details about the deterioration of women’s self-confidence over the past decade.

The Dove brand launched a campaign for Real Beauty, however, whilst initially showing gains the most recent report from 2024 showed that “two in every five women would be willing to “give up a year of their life to achieve their beauty ideals”. One in every five would go so far as to give up five years of their lives to achieve false definitions of beauty (Boechat & Diedrichs, 2024, p. 17 from the International Coalition of Girls schools e-brief Real Beauty: What would you give up to achieve your beauty ideals?)

Dove has made available resources to parents to be able to support their young people with self-confidence and body positivity.

Please find the resources here

At St Columba’s College we want every young person to be confident in who they are, created in the image and likeness of God and with innate human dignity.

St Columba's College Senior Expo

On Tuesday 23rd July, St Columba’s College held their Annual Senior Pathways Expo. We had an incredible turnout and exciting vibe from students who were eager to line up and ask Learning Area staff and tertiary representatives from various universities questions about pre-requisites for TAFE courses and University Degrees.

We also had a number of Alumnae attend and answer questions about career pathways, subjects and courses they are studying after leaving St Columba’s College. The event was a huge success and we appreciate all the help and assistance from staff and past students on the night.

This event proves to be a popular event year after year – below are some anecdotal quotes from students who attended:

“It was great to hear about other pathway options if I do not reach my ATAR”

“All my questions were answered under one roof”

“It was interesting to talk to alumnae and find out what they have achieve since leaving St Columba’s, also to understand how their pathways may have changed since leaving school”

“Getting information about TAFE from their representatives was beneficial to me”

“There were so many people I could ask advice from, it was very helpful”

Days for Girls Program

In Year 11, students are invited to participate in the Days for Girls program on the last Wednesday of every month at the Essendon Baptist Community Church, across the road from our school.  Days for Girls is an organization that aims to provide sustainable menstrual hygiene solutions to girls and women in need, particularly in areas where access to female sanitation products is limited. By cutting fabric and helping to make special kits, students can contribute to improving the lives of girls who face challenges in managing their menstrual hygiene. These kits typically include reusable cloth pads, waterproof shields, soap, and other essential items. These kits help girls maintain their dignity, stay in school, and participate fully in their communities.

Comments from some of the Year 11 students who have volunteered to participate:

It was really eye-opening to learn about the lack of personal care products available to the women in these communities when we take for granted the wide variety we have accessible to us. The ladies worked in a very organised system and made sure their products were of the best quality and very dedicated to providing these girls not only with the pads but also the relevant health information. – Meryam H

I helped out at the Days for Girls program in order to raise awareness about the issues surrounding menstrual health. I wanted to learn more about what the prominent issues are as well as how I can help and support them. I was very happy, felt very satisfied and proud to do my part with cutting up fabric and helping others.

Science Week - 12th - 16th August

Year 11 Reflection Day

On the 23rd of July, year 11 students had their reflection day, focused around the question ‘Can one person make a difference?’, a prominent idea in our lives.

We started by making our own way to St Mary of the Cross Square at ACU; fun to start the day on public transport with our friends!

The reflection day commenced as we gathered all together to listen to 5 guest speakers – who worked in collaboration with St Vincent’s Hospital just down the road – talk about their own experiences of how they and others around were able to make a positive difference to the world around them. Their stories and experiences were of great inspiration to all of us, I vividly remember many teachers and students alike chatting afterwards about how incredible they were.

Afterwards, we made our way through a series of rotations focused around reflecting on ourselves as well as what the guest speakers mentioned.

We concluded the day by listening to ACU talk about university life there and then breaking off into groups to take part in elective activities centred around the idea of making a difference and learning about others who did so.

Overall, it was an incredible experience where we had the opportunity to learn about how we can make a difference in our own and others’ lives. It was also great for it to be situated around ACU, a university many of us may choose to study at.

2025 Year 9 Mathematics Accelerated Pathway (MAPs)

Ready to flourish in mathematics?

STC is once again offering year 8 students who are seeking a greater challenge in mathematics an opportunity to be a part of the Mathematics Accelerated Pathway (MAPs) Program in 2025.

This enhanced curriculum will see our most talented mathematicians work on more complex tasks and learn topics to a greater depth and breadth. Our MAPs Program is intended to inspire students to make more connections between their studies and the world beyond the classroom. We hope that this will help to foster a life-long interest in mathematics that will extend far beyond VCE studies.

To be selected for this course, students must demonstrate outstanding knowledge in mathematics. We encourage students to have a discussion with their families and teachers before applying, about the challenges and expectations associated with a highly demanding course of study.

Students have all received instructions on how to apply for the Year 9 MAPs program via email.

Learning Enhancement & Acceleration Program excursion to the Junior Stretch Challenge & Conference.

The Year 7 Learning Enhancement & Acceleration Program allows students to attend the Junior Stretch Challenge and Conference at Ivanhoe Grammar.

The event is a day filled with intellectual exploration designed for motivated and ambitious students eager to elevate their skills to new heights. The day encourages students to delve into thoughtful conversations about global challenges and critical thinking activities. These activities are designed to foster essential skills for the future.

The students who attended excelled at representing St. Columba’s College.

We are very proud of their efforts and cannot wait to attend again in 2025!

As part of their attendance a few students wrote a reflection piece from their time at the conference:

“On Wednesday the thirty-first of July, myself and other academically accelerated girls received the opportunity to participate in the “thriving minds” conference in which we had the chance to conversate with like-minded individuals from schools all across the state and receiving a scholastic speech in a university style presentation from a student at Oxford University. This event entailed wide range of topics typically unexplored by the average year seven educational curriculum and acquiring exhilarating new knowledge on genetics, philosophy, and all the wonderfully mind-bending ways the human mindset adapts and changes to its surroundings and finished with a debate on whether “the fine tuning of the universe points to some form of godly entity” and this debate ended in a unanimous draw as each of the arguments provided were so strong. Each student from St Columba’s College had a chance to speak their mind and use their extended intelligence to represent our exceptional school and overall it was an incredible fuction and I believe I speak for all the students that attended along with me that we would be elated to be apart of something similar to this in the coming year.”

Author- Willow

The Junior Stretch and Challenge Conference was an incredibly eye-opening day, which was led by Julie Arliss, a very knowledgeable woman who taught us about genetics, gene engineering, philosophy and more. The thing I enjoyed most was when we were able to go into groups with students from the other schools and discuss our thoughts and opinions on a text.

Author – Bridie

I found the excursion to be quite educational about topics I didn’t know about before. The debate at the end was also very interesting and it was fun to hear both sides of the argument.

Future Directions Seminar Days

Seminar Day 1: Mock Interviews

On the 19th of June 2024, the Year 9 cohort had the privilege of partaking in a day called Future Directions Seminar Day. This day included having St Columba’s College alumni from a range of different corporations with experience across the work field.

HR manager Josie Galati is an accomplished hard-working woman with over 22 years of experience in the real estate industry. With her astounding knowledge in the workforce, she supplied the year 9s with great tips on how to prepare for their mock interviews. Her insights on job searching and interviewee advice immensely assisted the year 9’s in preparation for mock interviews and life after school.

Recruitment manager, Mary Manfre specialises in securing individuals with a stable job. Her observations on how to win a job in 10 days prepared the year 9’s for their upcoming job applications. This included proper attire, body language, oral presentation and how to write a resumé and cover letter. During the presentation, teachers Ms Lang and Ms Saric modelled the correct garments to wear when going for a job. The engagement she brought to the day, inspired the students to ask a plethora of questions, heavily supplying them with a great amount of knowledge.

In conclusion, the day was a huge success and the year 9 group explored the challenges of partaking in the work field and how to overcome them in an appropriate manner. St Columba’s College and the year 9s thank all the guest speakers for a much-appreciated day, and we look forward to seeing you for future year 9 seminar days.

Seminar Day 2: Subject Selection

29/7/2024

Subject selection is a daunting and yet exhilarating experience. It is the beginning of what is to be our future, the start of who we will be for the rest of our lives. There are so many options and possibilities that it can feel overwhelming, that we’re suffocating on the prospect of what is ahead. Before Future Directions Day, I was drowning in unanswered questions and chaotic information. But after…I found the detailed explanations of each subject option, the ability to ask as many questions as possible and the interviews with St Columba’s Alumnae extremely helpful. No longer was I on a sinking ship without a lifeboat, I had clarity and my nerves were calmed. The Alumnae’s reassurance that subject selection and choosing subjects you won’t continue is not the end of the world was invaluable. This whole process can be irrefutable, but with the guidance of your teachers, the support of your family

and friends and the Future Directions Day, subject selection is not rocket science, but you can surely choose to learn about it.

By Faith F

Future Directions Day was a very insightful experience that taught me a lot about what subject selection involves. The day outlined an overview of the subjects we had to choose from, possible paths we could take, as well as how to choose subjects effectively. In the second part of the day, the teachers went into a rundown of what each subject involved and what options there were in Year 11 to continue those subjects. I found this section really helpful to gain a better understanding of each elective. We then listened to students who had previously attended St Columba’s College who spoke about their experiences of subject selection and how they got to the career they are in now. It was great to be able to listen to people who were in our position just a few years ago. Later, we went to our Future Directions classes and discussed what career pathways and subjects we were interested in and began to plan what electives we would choose for Year 10. Overall, the day has helped me to understand the subject selection process and to make decisions for electives in Year 10 and beyond. Future Directions Day has encouraged me to reflect on what path I might want to pursue and has motivated me to discuss this with my parents, teachers and peers.

Vinnies Winter Sleepout

St Columba’s is hosting Vinnies Winter Sleepout on Friday 23 August online from our homes…

More than 25,000 Victorians will be homeless tonight. This includes young and old, people of diverse gender identities, people in cities and people in regional towns. Only 7% of people experiencing homelessness are rough sleepers? The ‘Hidden homeless’ are sleeping out in the car, on couches or in the backyard. No-one deserves to be without a home and the St Vincent de Paul Society Victoria (Vinnies Victoria) is working hard to ensure that all Victorians doing it tough receive the support that they need.

Vinnies Winter Sleepout at St Columba’s is an opportunity to get uncomfortable as a community – and not just with your sleeping arrangements. This is your chance as a family to change the lives of people in need and, in the process, change your perspective on homelessness.

We are inviting St Columba’s families to get involved in the Vinnies Winter Sleepout from the comfort and convenience of your own home. You choose where you will sleep either in a sleeping bag on the living room floor or in a tent in the backyard or in the garage it is up to you. The point is that you sleep somewhere which is out of the ordinary and uncomfortable so that you may get a small glimpse into what it might be like for the many Victorians who are currently homeless and see no end to sleeping on someone’s floor or in a car or on the street or in someone’s backyard.

Want to donate? It is only through the kindness of generous donors that Vinnies is able to continue their good works across Victoria.
