St Columba’s College provides VCE, VET, VCAL and TAFE programs to ensure genuine pathways are available for its graduates.
VCE
The VCE (Victorian Certificate of Education) is the most commonly accepted way to gain entry to a tertiary or advanced certificate course. A VCE program is a set of semester units undertaken over a minimum period of two years. Satisfactorily complete a minimum of 16 units that may include an unlimited number of units of VET and
- 3 units of English - must include units 3 and 4
- 3 other unit 3/4 sequences
Tertiary institutions and employers frequently require specific courses to be included in a Year 12 program. You are advised to consult tertiary program information and the Victorian Tertiary Admission Centre before choosing VCE courses.
VTAC PREFERENCE COUNSELLING
Every Year 12 student is given individual VTAC preference counselling to ensure that the most appropriate tertiary courses are selected. The importance of ENTER scores, prerequisites and extra requirements is emphasised in VTAC preference counselling.
VTAC
The Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre, (VTAC) handles student applications for tertiary courses and processes offers made by tertiary institutions. VTAC does not make any selections or decide who will be offered a position within a course, but passes on information to students from participating educational institutions.

SUBJECT COUNSELLING
Every Year 11 student is given individual subject counselling for the following year. The importance of selecting subjects that students enjoy, are good at and are required for tertiary study is emphasised.
VET
Vocational Education and Training (VET) in school programs aim to assist students make the transition to further education or training, work or a mixture of training and work.
VCE VET programs lead to nationally recognised qualifications, thereby offering students the opportunity to gain both the VCE and a nationally portable vocational education and training certificate.
The following VET programs are offered at St. Columba’s College:
- VET Business Administration (delivered at St. Columba’s College),
- VET Multimedia (Kangan TAFE),
- VET Clothing Concepts and Design (Kangan TAFE),
- VET Community Services (Kangan TAFE)
- VET Hospitality (William Angliss).
VCAL
The Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) is a senior school certificate that provides additional pathways for Years 11 and 12 students seeking vocationally oriented career options such as apprenticeships, traineeships, further education and training or moving on to employment.
VCAL provides students with a flexible approach to their education and training. It aims to provide the skills, knowledge and attitudes to enable students to make informed choices regarding work and further education.
Students can study some VCE and VET units as part of their VCAL program.
Some of our VCAL students are completing a School Based Apprenticeship as part of their VCAL program.
